Choosing Key Words and Key Phrases

How effectively this program will work is determined by your selection of keywords. The process of selecting keywords is not too complicated if you keep these three basic rules in mind.

  1. A single word will block all windows containing that word in the title. Use the shortest possible form of the word. Example: The keyword porn will block porn, pornographic, and pornography. Do not use plurals. The keyword explosive will block explosive, explosives, and explosively whereas the keyword explosives will only block explosives. Single words can be a problem if a longer word contains the keyword. If I enter the keyword hat it will block all words containing hat within themselves. Hat will block chatter for example. This keyword system has been designed to recognize blank spaces before and after the keyword. If I precede the keyword hat with a space when entering it, it will block all words starting with hat such as hate. If I enter the keyword hat followed by a space it will block all words ending with hat. Chat for example. If I put a space before and after the keyword hat it will only block the word hat.
  2. A group of words (a phrase) will block only those pages with the entire phrase in the title. It is a more selective method. The keyword phrase must be identical to the title phrase as far as spelling and spacing between words. It does not matter if you use upper or lower case letters. Use phrases whenever practical in preference to single keywords.
  3. Keep in mind that this program was developed primarily to keep children from viewing objectionable material. In choosing keywords you may find that a certain word is very effective in blocking the unwanted material but occasionally blocks a legitimate site. In these cases you can temporarily remove the filtering, if necessary, by using your password. Better to err on the side of safety and lose a few sites.

Pornography is probably the biggest threat to children when online. Fortunately it is also very easy to block. Porn site operators use words in their titles that are never found in legitimate web site titles. This means that you can use keywords instead of phrases. The word porn itself will block are large number of sites and is rarely found in a non-porn site title. Try also to pick words that someone might search on when trying to find porn. Most search engines display your search terms in their title so it is likely that the search engine will get bumped before it can do its job. Go online and try to find pornography that has slipped through the net. Examine their title bar and decide what to add to your keyword list. If you feel a little strange about adding foul language to your program then remember this. Any words you put on the list will keep your children from seeing them while online, plus, no one will ever see these words because you need a password to get in to where they are. Use the Log to determine if a user has found a way around the blocks. If so, use the words listed in the title to block further viewing.

Chat Rooms are becoming a major threat to children. You will have to decide whether you want to block all chat rooms or just certain ones. The keyword chat will block a big majority of them but also will block some good sites also. Use the system of preceding and following the keyword with blank spaces as outlined in the first paragraph. Blocking specific chat rooms works well if you know the name of the chat room. Read the title bar and enter it as a key phrase. This will block only that particular web site. Again, search around for chat rooms and pick good key phrases from their titles. Use the Page Log to see what sites your children are visiting and block them individually.

Pop Up Ads are becoming a real nuisance. Especially the ones that are larger than life and force you to work to remove them. Here is how to get rid of them for good. When one pops up, examine the title bar. If it contains a word that you feel would not be in any other titles you would mind not seeing, such as casino, then enter casino as a keyword. You can do this while the ad is still displayed. Open PcGuard Setup with your password and enter the keyword to the list. Press the Close button and you will see the ad get zapped into non-existence. Mostly you are finding the same ad in many different places. This eliminates them everywhere. Using the company name works well if you don't plan to visit their web site. Most times a short phrase is better than a word.

Blocking an offline program is easily done. Open the program and copy down its opening page title. Add it to your list as a Key Phrase.

Blocking a specific file. Open the file and use its title as a key phrase.

This same procedure can be used to block internet downloads or games that you do not want played, or anything that your computer has available.

Remember, You have the Password and can shut the filters off for your own use or for special cases when you are supervising!
